God Goes First

Recently someone shared Deuteronomy 9:3 with me, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.

“But be assured today that the LORD your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; He will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly, as the LORD has promised you.”

I love the order of that verse.

God goes first.

He goes before His people like a devouring fire.

He destroys what they cannot destroy.

He subdues the enemy before them.

He makes the way.

Then comes their part.

“And you will drive them out…”

Not because God needed their strength.

Not because they earned the victory.

But because He invited them to cooperate with what He was already doing.

I think that’s still how God works today.

He supplies the power.

He gives the grace.

He convicts.

He leads.

He transforms.

Then He invites us to cooperate with Him.

Sometimes our part is to forgive.

Sometimes it’s to repent.

Sometimes it’s to take a step of faith.

Sometimes it’s to resist temptation.

Sometimes it’s simply to obey the next thing the Holy Spirit is asking us to do.

Our obedience may look different, but the principle remains the same:

God goes first. We cooperate.

We don’t fight alone, and we don’t fight in our own strength.

“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the LORD.”

God has always gone before His people.

He has always supplied the power.

Yet He has always invited His people to participate in what He is doing.

Not because He needs our strength, but because He desires our obedience.

That’s partnership.

That’s how the Kingdom works.
