This Is Too Heavy For You

EXODUS 18

There is something powerful about Exodus 18.

Before Jethro ever gave Moses counsel, they first sat together and talked about the goodness of the Lord. They rejoiced together, worshiped together, offered sacrifices, and broke bread together.

There was relationship before correction. Then Jethro watched Moses lead.

From morning until evening, Moses carried the weight of the people alone. Every problem. Every dispute. Every decision came to him.

And Jethro said:

“This thing is too heavy for you.”

What ministers to me is that Moses was not doing something sinful. He was helping people. He cared deeply. He wanted to lead well.

But even good things become unhealthy when we try to carry them alone.

Jethro gave Moses wisdom:

Teach the people. Show them how to walk. Help them grow. Appoint trustworthy people to help carry the burden.

In other words:

Stop trying to be everything for everyone.

If Moses handled every issue himself, the people would never grow in wisdom, responsibility, or discernment. Sometimes helping people too much can actually keep them dependent.

And one of the most beautiful parts of this story is this:

Moses listened.

No pride. No defensiveness. Just humility and wisdom.

I think many of us have sat in Moses’ seat before. Trying to carry everyone, fix everything, hold everything together, and slowly becoming exhausted in the process.

But God never asked one person to carry what requires community, wisdom, and shared burden.

There is also something powerful about Jethro’s role in this story. He noticed the weight Moses was carrying and cared enough to speak truth.

Sometimes love encourages. Sometimes love corrects. Sometimes love says:

“This is too heavy for you.”

Exodus 18 reminds me:

Structure matters.

Boundaries matter.

Endurance matters.

Even Moses needed help.

That is not failure after all.

That is wisdom.

I want to stay humble and a listener like Moses.

How about you?
