I Hoped For More

The grief wasn’t that someone was cruel.

The grief wasn’t that someone betrayed me.

The grief wasn’t even that a season ended.

The grief was simpler than that.

I hoped for more.

I hoped for deeper friendship.

Deeper connection.

More understanding.

More mutuality.

I hoped that time would deepen what already existed.

I hoped one day I would feel chosen.

Not tolerated.

Not appreciated.

Chosen.

That’s the hardest part.

Not accepting what was.

Accepting what wasn’t.

Accepting that two people can genuinely care about each other and still not occupy the same place in each other’s lives.

Accepting that a relationship can be good and still not become what you hoped it would become.

That kind of grief is quiet.

There is no villain.

No dramatic ending.

No explosion.

Just acceptance.

Just the realization that hope and reality are not always the same thing.

I hoped for more.

And that hope was real.

But so is this moment.

And sometimes healing begins when we stop grieving what happened and start accepting what never happened at all.
